Directed by Fred Alvarado and Joshua Stevenson.
Designed by Marcus Kelly-Jackson, Fernando Diaz, Tino,
Robbie, Skyler, Ryland, Philip, Ronnie Freeman, Eli Lippert,
Ernesto Aguilar, Mauricio Ramirez, and Javier Schmidt.
The Utility Boxes along 24th Steet are the sites of the newest
community mural project designed by the Precita Eyes Muralists
Kids Mural Arts Program, the Precita Eyes Urban Youth Arts
Program (UYA), the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts (MCCLA)
and four other Precita Eyes Mural Artists.
As the Mission has always been predominantly a Latino district, both the
sidewalk and the street facing sides are dominated by contemporary and
historically significant images from Central and South American, including
pre-Columbian, (Aztec and Mayan art) as well as references to Dia de los
Muertos, a favorite local holiday.
Portraits of Malcolm X and Bruce Lee, two people who examined their
own identities and how each related to a dominant culture, face towards
Mission Street and South Van Ness, on the short sides of the box. These
figures are both heroes to the students in the class.
