Precita Eyes Kids Mural Art Workshop is a Wednesday after school class
for children ages 5-11 with a focus on public art and monumental painting. For
the mural on the Utility Box at the Southwest corner of 24th and Folsom Streets,
the students worked from images in many publications of art and symbols from
various cultures.

The workshop started with a group discussion concerning heritage, our own and
the heritage of the diverse group of people that makes the Mission District so
colorful and beautiful. Then the students spent time seeing which images they were
intuitively drawn to and what these images meant to them and how the images might
be interpreted in each culture.

The images that were most appealing represented peace and togetherness, flight and
freedom, spiritual honoring, good luck, and animals as guides such as the owl as the
messenger. Most students were interested in a creative challenge, choosing to push
themselves in reproducing form and detail. Many also expressed a simple attraction
to the image because it was "cool" or "radical".
