Directed by Cory Calandra
Designed by Laura Joya, Brenda Miller and Patricia Rose
The mural on the Utility Box at the Southeast corner at 24th and Harrison
Streets begins with our roots. Ancient, ancestral images and modern icons
drawn from the cultures of China, India, Europe, and from the Mayan and
Aztec people adorn the base of the box.
Midway up the box, these images begin to transform into "milagros," which
are small, devotional objects used in prayer. Milagros are common in Mexico
and throughout Latin America; they are available in churches and cathedrals as
well as outdoor markets. In the mural design, our milagros combine traditional
shapes, recognized everywhere (hearts, hands, arms, legs), with more modern,
or non--traditional shapes (peace signs, paintbrushes, shoes) that also reflect our
dreams and prayers.
The milagros form a border, or frame, around each of the four faces of the upper
part of the box. These are the faces of the Mission District: a well known flower
vendor, a hip hop dancer, an ice cream seller, and a family operated bakery owner.
These four represent the cultures of the neighborhood now.
